What is a visa Sri Lanka and how can I apply for it?

All travellers with Dutch and Belgian nationality need to apply for a Sri Lanka visa before they are allowed to travel the country. When travellers plan to stay less than 30 days in Sri Lanka, for business or pleasure, the e-visa Sri Lanka, also called ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is sufficient. You can apply for this e-visa here easily and completely online.

After the granting of the (e-)visa/ETA Sri Lanka, the traveller should print it out and take it with him on his trip.

What types of visas Sri Lanka can I apply for?

Sri Lanka has several types of visas that you can apply for. For example, there are:

A Visa on Arrival can be obtained on arrival at Colombo airport for a fee of $40 USD. However, there are long waiting times associated with this,
E-visas (ETA) Sri Lanka can be applied for online. This is possible up to 90 days before departure. The electronic visa for Sri Lanka allows you to enter and leave the country twice, within 30 days of first entry. Do you want to travel out of the country after 30 days and back in again? Then you need to apply for a new Sri Lankan visa,
Regular Sri Lankan visa can be obtained at the embassy. This Sri Lanka visa is intended for travellers who want to stay longer than 90 days or, for any other reason, are not eligible for an electronic visa.

The processing time normally takes only 4 working days from the time of submission. Both tourist and business visas are valid for 30 days, the transfer visa is valid for 48 hours.

Validity period of the eTA

On the eTA for Sri-Lanka, you are allowed to stay in the country for 30 days. After time of issue, the visa is also valid for 30 days to travel into the country.

Conditions of the ETA

All travelers with Dutch and Belgian citizenship must apply for a visa Sri Lanka before they are allowed to travel the country. If travelers intend to stay less than 30 days in Sri Lanka for business or tourism, then the e-visa Sri Lanka, also called eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is sufficient. Urgent eTA applications

Visa Sri-Lanka processing takes only 24 to 69 hours from the time of submission. In practice, this usually means that you will receive your urgent visa within one business day.

Transfer with eTA

The transit visa is a travel authorization for travelers in transit or with a short stop in Sri Lanka. It can be used to stay a maximum of two days in the long. With that, it has a considerably shorter validity period than the regular tourist visa.

After all, the regular eTA is valid for 30 days, compared to 2 days for the transit visa.

Taking your visa with you when you travel

You need to download and print your e-Visa. We recommend doing this twice. Carry this document with you in your carry-on luggage. We recommend downloading your e-Visa on your phone as well, just to be safe. Have a great trip!

Which conditions apply to my passport?

All passports issued by the Dutch or Belgian government meet the conditions set by Sri Lanka. However, the passport must still be valid for at least six months from the time the traveler arrives in Sri Lanka.

Is there an O (letter) or a 0 (number) in my passport?

Document numbers in the Netherlands never contain the letter “O,” but may contain the digit “0.” So even if it looks like there is a letter O in your passport , it will be the number 0. It is also important to know that document numbers in the Netherlands are nine characters long.

Belgian document numbers may have the letter(s) “O” and/or the digit “0”. Belgian document numbers are eight characters long and always begin with two letters followed by six digits.

Which conditions apply to my photograph?

For e-visa, the scan should be sharp and legible, the information page should be in full view. The passport photo/scan for both e-visa and physical visa should be of high quality and in color with a white background. Head covering is allowed on the passport photo only if it is for religious consideration: having the entire face visible is then a requirement.

I made a mistake in my application and/or documents. Can I correct this error?

In this case, please contact us as soon as possible to indicate what is not in order. Whether your visa application can still be corrected depends on the nature of the error and the status of your application. If we have not delivered your application to the embassy yet, it is possible to make changes. If your application is already in the hands of the embassy, there is nothing we can do. You must obtain a new visa with the proper information and cancel the existing one.
